Guterres Voices Concern over Attacks on Diplomatic Missions in Iraq
SMA NEWS – Washington
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has voiced concern over attacks targeting diplomatic missions in Iraq.
He demanded that the Iraqi government hold “accountable” those involved in the attacks.
In the latest report on the implementation of UN Security Council resolution 2522 and the work of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the secretary-general welcomed passing the necessary legislations as a prelude for early elections.
However, he indicated that the law on the Federal Supreme Court must be adopted and an agreement about the Court membership must be reached.
Guterres stressed that it is the responsibility of every Iraqi stakeholder to guarantee the continuity of preparations including choosing elections’ personnel and avoiding political interference.
“The Government of Iraq took steps to address the budget deficit, which was compounded by a decline in global oil prices and the economic impact of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic,” the report read.
Guterres further called for fast tracking the implementation of suggested reforms, describing the reforms as inevitable.
Yet, he underscored the importance of political agreement in order to guarantee their success.
The continuous attacks on diplomatic convoys and missions in Iraq is concerning, and the government is required to cooperate with active parties to safeguard the diplomatic missions and staff in Iraq.
The government should also direct its efforts towards addressing security violations firmly and holding accountable those who stand behind the attacks.
Guterres further highlighted the challenges facing Iraqis while practicing their rights in freedom of speech and peaceful gathering.
