Absence of the South Exhausts Griffith’s Mission
UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffith, is consulting with all Yemeni parties to end the war and establish bases for negotiation to solve the Yemeni crisis. Consultations are held away from participation of southern powers as active powers on the ground in addition to marginalizing the role of southern transitional council in stopping the war and post-war arrangements. This is not serving the final solution as the southern people are active powers on the ground that can help solving all issues. Any solution that doesn’t recognize the reality after expelling Al-Houthi / Affash occupation in 2015 will do no good. The south and its cause are now powers that can not be ignored.
Ignoring the southern cause and southern people by any party including UN, represented by it envoy Martin Griffith, the legitimacy of president Hady or Al-Houthi coup militias, will never serve peace, security and stability of Yemen or the region. Instead, it will make things worse and will never solve problems of the region.
What is said behind the scenes that both parties of Yemeni conflict (legitimacy and coup), don’t accept the southern transitional council as partner in negotiations to end the war is a very limited act. Absence of the south and its real representatives is exhausting the mission of UN envoy. It is not strange to see Al-Houthis refusing the southern people and their transitional council as we all know that Al-Houthi coup militias are the fierce enemy of the south and its cause as the militias have their own agendas to create stress and conflicts in the south just to weaken its brave resistance that defeated them in 2015.
What is really strange is the refusal of president Hady to host a representative of the southern cause during upcoming negotiations. In this case, the president will lose a strong supporter who can save him from the crisis he puts himself in, or even imposed to him under certain previous conditions. This string supporter is the one capable of holding the southern cause towards a solution that satisfies the southern people, as southern people will never accept any projects that deny them their natural right of self-determination and restore their independent state. In my opinion, Hady’s refusal of the southern transitional council as a representative of the southern people in any negotiations will lead to a fragile agreement as the active southern partner is absent. This will exhaust the mission of UN envoy and lead matters to an undesired direction.
