North Korean leader backs away from military action against southern neighbor

orth Korean leader Kim Jong Un has decided to suspend plans to carry out military actions against his neighbor, South Korea, according to official media in North Korea, after days of escalation and tension between the two Koreas.Kim’s regime has recently stepped up its verbal attacks against South Korea, criticizing in particular that dissidents from his country have been sending out flyers to the North via balloons.
After formal communication channels were cut, North Korea last week attacked the Joint Liaison Office that opened in 2018 in the north of the DMZ, and was symbolic of the inter-Korean truce that year.
The North Korean army announced that it would begin moves against the south, including controlling the inter-Korean cooperation sites currently frozen, re-establishing observation posts in the demilitarized zone, or even intensifying military exercises.
But the official North Korean News Agency reported on Wednesday that Kim chaired a meeting of the Central Military Commission, which “suspended plans for military action against the south,” and gave no further explanation for this change in strategy
