[su_label type=”info”]SMA News – London – Exclusive [/su_label][su_spacer size=”10″] Chris Halliday, chairman of Yemen Department at the British Ministry of Foreign Affair, during his meeting with Murad Al-Halemy, member of the presidency of the southern transitional council and former minister of transportation, expressed the British interest in the situation in the south and that the southern cause is on the agenda of the new UN delegate to Yemen. He indicated that the British ministry of foreign affairs is extremely interested in that respect and the southern cause should take its place in the media. He said: “UK is watching carefully the situation in the south and the recent development between the southern transitional council and the government. UK thinks that the relation between the transitional council and President Hady should be strengthened”. He also added: “UK supports the efforts of the Coalition in restoring legitimacy and the British policy fosters rapprochement between the council and the legitimacy”. The meeting discussed efforts of UK in the the quartet commission to the success of the UN delegate’s mission in Yemen, especially with a British official in the position.
In turn, Al-Halemy appreciated the invitation to the meeting asserting that the southern transitional council appreciates the efforts of UK with all parties. He said: “The southern transitional council is the outcome of an original southern movement formed during struggle for the south. It is the expression of the biggest political movement in the south as its organizational structure includes representatives from all southern governorates and cities. It is not fabricated or invented like allies’ of 1994 war say. The council is open to all southern powers”. Al-Halemy added: “policies of the council are consistent with UK policies concerning the significance of strengthening the legitimacy. The council and the southern resistance defended legitimacy and their demand in dismissing the government go the same direction as the government suffers from corruption and abuse of federal money to create conflicts in the liberated territories. This government led us to financial collapse of national currency, poor services, famine, lack of fuel and abuse of public authority. All these crises may lead to the collapse of legitimacy in the liberated territories and creating more conflicts. This makes the dismissal of this government an urgent demand, in addition to replacing the administration of the central bank. By this, the legitimacy can reach a political solution that stabilizes the whole region and consistent with the public well of the southern people. All public demonstrations are natural results of this state of corruption and abuse of governmental power”.
Al-Halemy also explained in detail the reality of the southern movement and reasons behind failure of Yemeni union in addition to the importance of reaching political solution that is rightful to the south. He indicated that dismissing governors at the same time of declaring war against the south and the return of 1994 war ally to the government with the same political speech and the same failure in managing services made the link between the legitimacy and the southern people dissolve quickly. In addition, Al-Halemy asserted that the southern transitional council managed to be an effective partner with the Arab Coalition and the international society in restoring legitimacy, ending mutiny and fighting terrorism. Furthermore, he noted that the council is taking the peaceful path and welcomes any negotiations and talks as he will always be the first to seek peace and talks in resolving any conflicts as a representative of the south in all upcoming talks about the Yemeni crisis.
By the end of the meeting, both parties asserted the importance of coordination, continuous communication and joint work with the council to facilitate the success of the new UN delegate’s mission. The meeting was attended by Mr. Martin Gareth, representative of Yemen Stability Group in the British Ministry of Foreign Affairs and responsible for observing the situation in the south.
