Military says it has hit Gaza Strip amid tension with Palestinian militant group
At least 10 Palestinians, including a five-year old girl and a woman, were killed and 55 injured in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip on Friday, the Palestinian Health Ministry has said.
Israel said it was conducting the air strikes after “direct threats posed by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza”.
A “special situation” has been declared in Israel, the army stated.
The Islamic Jihad movement said a Gaza commander, Tayseer Al Jabari, was among those killed.
The Israeli army confirmed Al Jabari had been the target of the strikes.
“Tayseer Al Jabari was responsible for multiple terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians. The [Israel Defence Forces] will continue to defend Israel against the threat of terrorism,” it said.
