Syria’s UN Envoy Arrives in Cairo

The UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, arrived in Cairo on Wednesday.

During his three-day visit, the UN official is scheduled to meet with senior Egyptian officials, including Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, to discuss the latest developments in Syria.

In a telephone call with Shoukry in October, both sides tackled means to advance the political settlement to end the Syrian crisis.

Shoukry stressed his country’s position in support of resolving the Syrian crisis in a way that preserves its unity and sovereign decision.

His comments come in light of Cairo’s talks with the moderate Syrian opposition factions to ensure an end to the country’s conflict.

Pedersen has also contacted Iranian, Turkish and Russian officials and visited Damascus in preparation for a new round of Constitutional Committee meetings.

According to Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, the Committee is Syria’s, and only Syrians have the exclusive right to decide the fate of their country.

Once it was formed and started operating, the Committee has become independent and responsible for deciding the recommendations and means of work, SANA quoted Moallem as saying during his meeting with Pedersen.

Both sides stressed the importance of the Committee’s success to achieve its objectives, the agency said.

This requires adherence to the agreed upon rules of procedures, especially no foreign intervention in its work and no forced timetables, it added.
