The Supreme Economic Committee of the Southern Transitional Council issued an important clarification regarding the dispute with the Central Bank over the payment of salaries of southern armed and security forces,

The text is as follows:

In light of the keenness of the self-administration of the South and its responsibilities in preserving the public interest of the south, the self-administration, through the Supreme Economic Committee, sought to settle the file of the funds that were preserved, with a view of immediate payment of the salaries of military, security, and civil sectors, and to stop the repercussions of currency collapse and to address and prevent the deterioration of the life that affected citizens as a result of failure and corruption practiced by government institutions.

The Self-Administration represented by its President, Major General Ahmed Saeed bin Brik, initiated to hold a meeting with the Central Bank Administration on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, in the presence of Dr. Abdussalam Homaid, Chairman of the Higher Economic Committee – Member of the Self-Administration, Dr. Saad Mohammad Saad, Chairman of the Legal Committee of the National Assembly, and Mr. Abu Bakr Baobaid, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Aden, where demands were made for self-administration to accelerate the payment of salaries of the armed and security forces in the capital, Aden, and the liberated southern governorates, which have not been paid for about five months of the year 2020 and about seven months for the past two years.

After the understanding and agreement between the two parties in this regard, the bank deputy governor asked for an opportunity to communicate with the government and the governor of the central bank in Riyadh, and inform us back about the result at midnight on Tuesday.

Indeed, the President of the Self-Administration was informed of the approval, and the following morning, Wednesday, representatives of the Economic Committee (the Finance Committee) were assigned to sit with the deputy governor of the Central Bank and to discuss the items of the minutes, after which it would be signed.

However, the committee in charge was surprised that the Central Bank leadership did not agree to sign the minutes, justifying that this matter is within the authority of the government and we know with certainty that the government directed the central bank not to sign and implement the agreement minutes, without any clear justifications, and without any consideration of the living conditions of citizens, and the insistence of imposing more torture on them, and as a continuation of the government’s policy of the collective punishment against the southern people and the army and security sectors.

In the face of this dangerous development, we hold the Yemeni government the consequences and repercussions of depriving the military and security of their monthly salaries for several months, and its insistence on the practice of torturing the people, as this affects their lives and the livelihood of their families, noting that this irresponsible intransigence, persistence and systemic failure has its dire consequences.
