In his First Visit to Yemen, IOM Envoy Visits Abian

[su_label type=”info”]SMA News – Abian – Exclusive[/su_label][su_spacer size=”10″] Mahdy Al-Hamed, secretary general of local authority council of Abian met Mr. Sarat Dash, head of Internal Organization of Migration (IOM) delegation to Yemen, and Mr. Rabia Ser Al-Din, director of IOM office in Aden, in Abian Governorate’s headquarters to discuss aids provided by IOM to Yemeni people in Abian and to identify limitations and suggestions in addition to local authority vision of projects and aids needed in the future.
Welcoming the visitors, Al-Hamed appreciated the role of IOM in humanitarian aids and explained problems and damages in Abian as a result of 2011 and 2015 wars. He also indicated that matters are now settling in Abian, especially after the appointment of General Abu Bakr Hussain Zamam as governor. He hopped that Mr. Dash may reflect a positive image of security and stability of Abian after his visit.
Al-Hamed indicated that Abian needs more urgent support in education, agriculture, fisheries and water and demanded that the governorate transfers from emergency status to development. He added that local authorities in the governorate looks for strategic projects that serve citizens and expressed the governorate’s willingness to deliver a matrix of required developmental projects in Abian.
Mr. Sarat Dash expressed his happiness of his first field visit to Abian. He expressed his willingness to reflect a positive image about the new conditions he saw and felt in his visit. He also indicated that he will transfer the local authorities demand of transferring from emergency status to development to concerned authorities. Dash indicated that IOM is concerned with migrants in specific as it works in humanitarian sectors for helping and supporting refugees and migrants with expectations of development.
Waddah Hammas, director of office of planning and international cooperation, indicated that implanted areas of Abian are decreasing due to wars and the collapse of irrigation system in addition to increase of fuel prices that represented the smash hit to all farmers. In fisheries activities, he indicated that the same reasons caused the number of fishermen to decrease leaving thousands of families without financial sources of living. He confirmed the importance of urgent interference in agriculture and fisheries in specific.
