Lamlas and UN official discuss issues of displacement and migration

The Minister of State, Governor of the capital, Aden, Mr. Ahmed Hamid Lamlas, affirmed the readiness of the local authority for true partnership with organizations that are keen to coordinate and communicate in advance with them to solve issues of displacement, asylum and migration.
This came during his meeting, on Wednesday, with Mr. Mohammed Rafik Nasri, Chief of Operations at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Yemen, where they discussed coordination mechanisms and aspects of cooperation to deal with issues of displacement, asylum, and irregular migration.
Lamlas stressed that the capital, Aden, faces many challenges in the absence of strategic programs to deal with issues of displacement, asylum, and irregular migration, noting that the local authority has submitted proposals and ideas to various concerned organizations, including providing shelters to prevent their spread in the streets, with the aim of protecting them and limiting them from any security, health or social problems that they may cause.
Lamlas pointed out that the leadership of the local authority had already submitted, earlier as well, a proposal to hold a regional conference for the concerned countries to develop solutions to the problem of irregular migration and limiting it.
Lamlas stressed that the local authority is ready for true partnership with organizations that are keen to coordinate and communicate with them in advance in this regard, noting that the coordination process has greatly contributed to solving many problems faced by organizations working in this field.
The Director of Operations at the High Commissioner reviewed a number of projects and works implemented by the Commission in various sectors, particularly water and sanitation, and support for voluntary return programes, in addition to the programs that the Commission is looking forward to implementing a number of interventions and working on, and finding durable solutions for them.
During the meeting, the two sides stressed the importance of updating policies for dealing with displacement, studying mechanisms and proposals for developing them, as well as emphasizing the need to expand the areas of dealing and coordination according to the highest levels, in addition to the need to start permanent solutions for irregular migration in order to protect them.
The meeting discussed a number of outstanding issues in some projects, and the steps to solve and address them, through communication, reviewing their merits, and dealing with them in accordance with legal systems and regulations.
The meeting was attended by the Secretary-General of the Local Council, Bader Ma’awen, the Governor’s Adviser to Humanitarian Organizations, Reda Hajeb, and Muammar Alwan, a field official at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
