The Governor of Socotra discusses with UNESCO removal of damages of stranded oil ship

SMA NEWS – SOCOTRA
The Governor of Socotra governorate, Eng. Raafat Al-Thaqali, discussed on Wednesday, with officials of the World Heritage Organization “UNESCO” – via “Zoom” video communication – joint efforts to protect the marine environment of the archipelago from damage that may be caused by the oil ship “Dove of the Gulf” from environmental pollution that is devastated on the coast of the archipelago, which ran aground in late 2018 in the governorate.
The meeting dealt with the current situation of the ship, and the most important solutions and treatments required to get rid of its damage, considering its long-term stranding as the real danger it causes to the marine environment as a result of an oil leak during its stranding and the wear of its hull.
The meeting stressed the need for a specialized environmental team from UNESCO to conduct an environmental impact assessment and a comprehensive environmental survey of the area where the ship (Dove of the Gulf) ran aground, and to work with the local authority to put in place a radical treatment for the ship and protect the coasts from potential environmental pollution.
The meeting included Diego Zorya, Resident Representative and Acting Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, Salah Khaled, Representative of the UNESCO Office in the Gulf and Yemen, Mohammed Al-Jabri, Program Officer for Yemen, Rasool Sadov, Head of the Cultural Section at UNESCO, and Zakaria Saeed, Special Assistant to the Deputy Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen.
