Mr. Salem Al-Socotri, Minister of Agriculture, stressed the need to continue developing the work mechanism in the fishery sector, in accordance with ministerial decisions, evaluate the results, and strengthen positive controls for their implementation in the new year.
He directed that the priorities required to maintain fish prices be determined, as they are food commodities that must be traded at acceptable prices within the reach of community members.
In an expanded meeting of the fish sector on Monday, with the participation of the ministry’s undersecretaries and the heads of the fisheries authorities in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, Al-Socotri called for addressing the issue of high fish prices locally, by activating the legal regulations governing wholesale markets.
Al-Socotri decided to form a committee of specialists to prepare a graphical statistical study of the various fish sectors, to develop the mechanism of action towards enhancing fish production capabilities, and to benefit from the support provided by donor countries and organizations to complete infrastructure projects.
The meeting discussed the implications of decisions to stop fish exports to achieve self-sufficiency in the local market, regulate the export process of fish species, challenges to implementation, conditions for granting licenses to practice the profession, control the export process through land ports, and create a study of the marketing status of fish locally and internationally.
