SMA NEWS – RIYADH
Reigning AFC Champions League™ winners Al Hilal SFC completed a remarkable comeback on Monday to win the Saudi Pro League title for the third consecutive year.
Al Hilal defeated Al Faisaly 2-1, finishing two points ahead of long-time leaders Al Ittihad, who at one point held a 16-point lead at the top of the standings. Al Ittihad were held to a goalless draw by Al Baten in their final match on Monday.
Al Hilal won the league title for the 18th time, thanks to a brace from Nigerian forward Odion Ighalo at the King Fahd International Stadium.
Ighalo opened the scoring after only seven minutes as he converted a cross from Brazilian forward Michael, who also played a part in the second goal four minutes after the hour-mark.
Al Faisaly reduced the deficit through substitute midfielder Clayson, who headed home in the 74th minute.
Al Ahli were relegated from the top flight for the first time in their history following their goalless draw with Al Shabab.
The 2012 AFC Champions League finalists needed a win in order to maintain their hopes to remain in the top flight but they failed to defeat Al Shabab, who finished fourth behind Al Nassr who edged Al Fateh 2-1.
