Feryal Ashraf wins Egypt’s first gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics

SMA NEWS – TOKYO

Egyptian karateka Feryal Ashraf has won the gold medal in the Kumite +61kg event after beating her Azerbaijani opponent Irina Zaretska in the final.

Feryal finished on top of Group B with five points after winning two of her matches, while losing one and drawing the other.

She then had to face eventual bronze medalist Sofya Berultseva from Kazakhstan in the semi-final and came out victorious 5-4.

In the final she was up against Group A winner Irina Zaretska and managed to narrowly win 2-0 in what was a very tough encounter.

Feryal’s win comes just 24 hours after Gianna Farouk’s historic achievement of winning Egypt’s first-ever medal in the karate events, with a bronze medal in the Kumite 61kg.

This marks Egypt’s sixth medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the first gold medal, as the previous ones included one silver and four bronze.
