Jalal Yafei wins gold medal at Tokyo Olympics

Jalal Yafai won the gold medal in flyweight for Great Britain after defeating Carlo Balam of the Philippines in a split decision.

The 28-year-old knocked down his opponent in the opening round with a straight left ace and excelled in a high-octane competition to secure the referee.

An astonishing streak of performance concluded for the Birmingham boxer, who was competing in his second Olympics after losing his second match at Rio 2016.

All five judges gave Balam the final round of the competition, but Yafai had made enough progress to secure four of the five judges’ cards.
