SMA News – England
Joe Gomez is the latest Liverpool centre back to be injured following Virgil Van Dijk and his stand-in Fabinho.
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has now left the England camp after suffering a serious knee injury in training.
The 23-year-old will miss his country’s fixtures against Ireland, Belgium and Iceland due to the problem.
The news is a significant blow to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. His side is already without Virgil Van Dijk and Fabinho.
Following the announcement, England boss Gareth Southgate said: “We can’t speculate the exact nature of the injury, it’s not possible until we have seen scans.
“My immediate thoughts are with him because he has had some difficulties with injuries in the past.
“We are hoping it’s not going to be a long-term one. We just have to wait and see.”
It’s unclear at this time how long Gomez will be out for, but it’s thought to be a ‘serious’ injury.
We won’t know for sure until the results from the scan come back.
It will be a nervous wait for Liverpool fans. They now face an extended period of time with Joel Matip as the only senior centre back in their squad.
