A national consultative workshop in Aden the capital to reduce disaster risks

The capital, Aden, witnessed the holding of the national consultative workshop on the national coordination mechanism and the framework of the national strategy for disaster risk reduction, within the framework of the project to strengthen preventive measures to build community resilience in Yemen, which is implemented by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, and in cooperation with the Arab United Nations Office for Disasters & Risk Reduction UNDRR and in coordination with the Ministry of Water and Environment.

During the workshop, a number of speeches were delivered by the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation – Chairman of the Ministerial Committee for the Emergency, Relief and Crisis Agency, Dr. Waed Badheeb, and the Minister of Water and Environment, Eng. Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, and the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries, Major General Salem Al-Soqatri, in general, stressing the importance of finding a mechanism and national coordination and strategic framework for disaster risk reduction, to enhance preventive measures to build community resilience, and reduce losses and damages to reduce disaster risks, in addition to a speech by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport delivered by Dr. Ahmed Riyad, Project Director, and a speech by Dr. Fadi Al-Hanan, Deputy Director of the Office The United Nations Regional Council for Arab States for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and the workshop was moderated by Dr. Yasser Bazab, head of the national team of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, for the project to strengthen preventive measures to build community resilience. In the presence of the coordinator of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, Engineer Jamil Muqbil.

In the workshop, which was attended by a large number of stakeholders, deputy ministers, undersecretaries, academics, media figures, unions, the private sector, donor organizations and funds, civil society organizations, women, youth and people with special needs, two presentations were made, and the first presentation was by Dr. Karen Al Zoghbi, a consultant in disaster risk reduction, who addressed the objectives of the workshop, delivering an explanation of the development goals, the Sendai Framework, the Paris Agreement and their interconnectedness, and about the national coordination mechanisms and their importance, in addition to a presentation about the four priorities of the Sendai Framework. While Dr. Ruby Ziyadi presented remote sensing statistics.
The second presentation delivered was on the objectives of the National Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction, with a statement explaining the national risks, and a presentation on the clear priorities for disaster risk reduction in Yemen.
According to the draft National Coordination Mechanism, the participants were divided into working groups to add purposeful and constructive amendments and proposals that will be worked on and included in the National Coordination Mechanism and the National Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction framework.
